What is a geothermal heat pump, and how does it work?

A geothermal heat pump is a highly efficient system that uses the constant temperature of the earth to heat and cool your home. In winter, it extracts heat from the ground and transfers it into your home. In summer, it reverses the process, removing heat from your home and dispersing it into the ground.

Geothermal systems offer several benefits:

  • Energy Efficiency: Use 25-50% less electricity than traditional HVAC systems.
  • Cost Savings: Lower heating, cooling, and hot water bills.
  • Environmentally Friendly: Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by relying on renewable energy.
  • Durability: Underground loops last 50+ years; heat pump units can last 20-25 years.
  • Comfort: Provide consistent heating and cooling without drafts or hot spots.

The cost depends on your home’s size, soil conditions, and system type, typically ranging between $25,000–$40,000. However, substantial savings are available through government rebates like the Canada Greener Homes Grant and Ontario energy incentives. Financing options may also be available.

Installation involves an outdoor component and an indoor component, in normal conditions installation takes between 2-5 days. The timeline depends on factors such as property size, the complexity of the ground loop installation, and weather conditions.

The underground loops will last over 50 years, and the heat pump unit has an expected lifespan of 20–25 years with proper maintenance. These systems are a long-term investment in your home.

Geothermal systems work for most properties. Key considerations include:

  • Land Availability: For horizontal loops, you need sufficient yard space. Vertical loops require less space.
  • Soil Composition: Certain soils, like sandy or rocky ones, may affect installation methods.
  • Access: The property must be accessible for drilling or trenching equipment.

Yes, most geothermal systems can provide hot water through an add-on called a desuperheater. This captures excess heat from the system and uses it to preheat your water, reducing your water heating costs.

Geothermal systems are 3–5 times more efficient than traditional HVAC systems. For every unit of electricity used, they generate 3–5 units of heating or cooling energy. This efficiency results in significant energy cost savings, systems will easily pay for themselves before their lifespan is over.

No, geothermal systems are exceptionally quiet. The heat pump is located indoors, and the outdoor ground loops operate silently, unlike traditional air conditioners or heat pumps.

We partner with licensed, experienced contractors who will handle every step of the process, from system design to installation and ongoing maintenance. We can help connect you with a certified installer in your area.
